Poker Strategy for 7 Card Stud

7 Card Stud, along with Texas Hold'em, is the world's most favorite poker game. Top online poker tournament sites consistently offer poker software and online card rooms for these two poker games because they are sure crowd drawers and almost always guarantee the highest traffic of poker players on-site, especially at peak hours. In live card rooms at popular casinos and the world's biggest tournaments like the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Benny Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas or the World Poker Tour (WPT) on television, 7 Card Stud is the choice of frequent and professional poker players who have their eye on the big bucks because as the betting rounds proceed and the betting increments add up, the stakes are sure to go higher. 7 Card Stud requires your utmost patience and skill but the payoff is well worth it. Maximum bets double following the third round and large pots await the fortunate. You might want to read the rules first , or just get to the strategies then play poker already to test what you've learned right away.

7 Card Stud Tactics

Should you see in your opponents' hands the cards you need to improve yours, consider them dead to you. For example, you need five of a suit to make a flush but see those five cards in other hands. It is no longer possible to receive those cards. But if they aren't visible, there is still a chance that you will be dealt those cards.

It is worth betting on a high pair. Although if you see another player betting aggressively on what is likely to be a very good hand, you should watch it.

Do not bet all your money on a losing hand. For example, you are going for a straight but see the cards you need on another player's hand. Either change your strategy or get out of the game.

If the visible cards of another player beat your entire hand, it is time to fold. The secret to winning at 7 Card Stud is in knowing when to quit and cut your losses.

Fifth Street is make-or-break. Keep in mind that the bet amount doubles each round so your hand better win in the end or you are in for a painfully major loss.

Betting at 7 Card Stud

The game begins with players placing an ante on the table. The ante is set by the card room and does not apply to games with increments of 50 cents or a dollar. Five betting rounds follow to complete the game.

The player with the lowest-value door card "brings in" and initiates the first betting round. The minimum allowed bet must equal half the minimum bet for the game. In succeeding rounds, the highest hand starts the betting. If hands tie, the player to the left of the dealer acts first.

The bets are determined by the game increments. For example, in a game with $2 and $4 betting increments, the first two rounds of betting and raising are set at a low of $2, while the last three rounds, at a high of $4. But when a player produces a pair with his two cards face up on Fourth Street, all the other players may bet the lower or higher limit, or in this case, $2 or $4. Once a player bets the high of $4, all subsequent raises must be made at the higher level.

Each player is allowed a maximum number of four bets at any betting round. These include the bet, raise, re-raise, and cap. Capping refers to the third raise in a round; betting is then capped and no one can make another raise. Once capped, players only have the option of calling or folding. When players have folded, the first Active Player to the left of the dealer will be first to act.
